Maintenance When I rebolt, I try to use the best Maintenance When I rebolt, I try to use the best materials available. The concept that rock is a finite resource and that we should also try to limit the number of holes drilled is becoming increasingly popular, at least among those who care not only about their own time, but also about that of future climbers. The average lifespan of a stainless steel anchor is about 20 years. In 60 years, a route, at best, has already been rebolted three times. What will happen when there’s no more space to rebolt in the correct positions? “It’ll be a problem for future climbers” doesn’t seem like the answer. In my own small way, I’m using 316L stainless steel and chemical anchors (with pure epoxy glue) to rebolt, which currently seems to have the greatest longevity. I’m equipping myself with an extractor to reuse the mechanical anchor hole to insert the chemical anchors without having to drill a new hole. Dalla paura del volo, a quella di “non sono in grado”, al timore di non avere una sicura corretta. Da anni propongo uno stage evoluto in cui lavorare insieme su questi e tanti altri aspetti, per fare il punto su dove siamo e dove vorremmo arrivare.
